Olympic Speedskating Analysis
TURIN,
Italy – The Winter Olympics' best soap opera returned to the ice here Saturday, where
Shani Davis made history by taking gold in the 1,000 meters,
Chad Hedrick made things more contentious by taking shots at Davis, and
Joey Cheek continued to make nice with everybody, especially the refugee children of Sub-Sahara Africa.
Other than that, it was just your typical day for the delightfully dysfunctional U.S. speedskating team, which is why we cant wait for Tuesday's 1,500-meter race so we can do it all again.
These Olympics have been defined by an X-Games generational philosophy where it is good enough just to compete. Win gold, win silver, win nothing – who cares? It's been all
Bode Miller and
Lindsey Jacobellis. Everyone is above average. Screw the pressure, dude.
Not in speedskating. These guys are Machiavellian. These guys would shank each other if they could. There is little team pride, lots of back biting and no smiles for second (except from Cheek, who won silver Saturday and is cheerful every day). Consider Davis and Hedrick live in the same house here but don't train together and never speak. "He's up on the top floor," said Davis, "I'm on the first floor. I mind my business, he minds his business." Consider Hedrick is still fuming because Team USA lost in team pursuit last week (ending his possible dream of winning five gold medals, although he now says he never dreamed it), in part because Davis wouldn't participate because he was concentrating on individual races.
"I respect the talent that (Shani) has," said Hedrick. "Whether he and I have the same outlook on things," he paused, "who knows what's right and wrong? I am here as part of Team USA, whether it be in team pursuit or practicing with everybody, I try to create a positive vibe so we can come out here and represent our country the best we can." Davis, meanwhile, trains on his own, away from the team and his career is run by his mother, Cherie, who many inside the USOC consider unorthodox and heavy-handed, to say the least. "She did what she had to do," Davis said. "And I would say it worked." As for team pursuit, Davis is unapologetic about not competing. He couldn't care less about Hedrick or Hedrick's dreams, only his own. "It's just his opinion [that I am] unpatriotic or I'm not a team player," said Davis. "Ever since I was a kid, I would joke around with friends that I want to win that 1,000 meters. [I] had an opportunity to chase that dream."
Davis points out that the 1,000 is his best race and it came just two days after team pursuit, which is why he wanted to save his legs. He isn't buying the idea that Hedrick would have risked his stamina if it his best event (the 5,000 meters) was looming. "Would Chad have skated team pursuit if team pursuit was a day before the 5,000?" Davis asked. "We'll never know." Besides, Davis said that by skipping team pursuit, he allowed one of Team USA's alternates the chance to experience Olympic competition, which is what he said a real teammate would do. "I told myself I would never, ever take someone else's opportunity to skate at the Olympics, and I stuck to my word," Davis said. None of these explanations work with Team USA coaches Eric Heiden and Dan Jansen, two of the greatest American skaters ever, who don't seem to care much for their gold medalist. "He is going his own way," said Heiden. "He is not a team player." "I would rather not speak about Davis," said Jansen. "I don't want to have problems with him. He doesn't say a lot to us. He goes his own way." Hedrick isn't buying it either. Like all good catfights, he neither congratulated Davis for beating him in the race (Hedrick finished sixth) nor had much praise for him. Are you happy for Shani, he was asked. "I'm happy for Joey," he said. "Joey has been skating real well." What about Shani? "Shani skated fast today, that is about all I have to say."
Davis laughed at it. "At least he said I skated fast. That was nice." Davis isn't even surprised. He said he has "a lot of respect for Chad" and said it was natural for them to butt heads. "Sure, he is going to be a little sore about it," said Davis. "He wants to win like I want to win."
Meanwhile, there was Joey Cheek, who gets along with both of them and has to be the peacemaker.. "Joey gave me a hug almost as big as my momma," Davis said. "No, no, no, no peacemaker for me," laughed Cheek, before announcing he was donating $15,000 more dollars to the Right To Play charity to aid poor kids in Sudan. And we haven't even mentioned that Davis became the first black male to win a gold medal in the Winter Olympics, just days after Bryant Gumbel said the Games had too few black athletes and Davis had received racially charged threats for skipping team pursuit. Like we said, other than that, not much happened.
No matter which character you side with in this battle – and all of them have compelling cases – the beauty of it is how brutally cutthroat and unforgiving each of them are. Everyone just wants to win gold and they aren't going to apologize for it. "You don't get anything for second place," said Hedrick.
Bode and Lindsey would break down in tears if they hung with the speedskaters.
If you are keeping score at home, it's one gold for Hedrick, one gold for Davis, one gold, one silver and a possible human rights award (but no Harvard admission) for Cheek.
Tuesday they race again, 1,500 meters, and plenty of drama on the way.
Who said this was easy...
Wow time sure has flown by! We are just weeks away from the end of the year.
Molls went and got married, Lupes it out there helping the less fortunate, Neets is expecting, Ape has got that special someone in her life! WOW! How different life is 4 years later from when we all met. Now we are quickly approaching our 2nd Olympics cheering on Apolo and our first Olympics as friends. I don't know who went but I hope everyone that is in Marquette this week is having a great time! I miss going to comps, but ahhhh so is life. One day I promise I'll be back!
And me...well I have Ambrosio. We're working on our relationship. Mind you it's not quite as easy as I first thought. But we're having fun working at it. I've had plenty of relationships before, but none like this. I always got going before the going got tough. But with Ambrosio I find myself willing to stay and work all of our insecurities out. He's a real sweetheart, but he has his moments of being, well....a man! It's amazing how all our lives girls are hammered into believing that WE are the ones with issues and a man is a man is a man. But come to find out we're not. Men have issues and insecurities too! While I know this may not be a revelation to most of you, it was to me. Because I've always dealt with men on a very superficial level, never really getting to know the heart of them, because I didn't either care enough about them to know or they were never around long enough for me to learn.
Now with that said, I have Ambrosio who on the outside gives off this bad boy macho impression. His "Don't fuck with me" mentality can be rather intimidating to the naked eye. But he's not like that at all. He's real sweet and kind and caring. And to my surprise has very low self- esteem. So I do my best to pump him up and make him feel better about himself. It makes me feel better to. To see that my opinion of him means that much to him is a great feeling! But as with everything in my life this relationship is unconvential to say the least. I've never been one to do things normal or typical. And our relationship is no exception.
He lives and works 3 hours away and grant it I knew him before he moved away, but we didn't take that next step until after he moved away so when he comes into town for the weekend I feel like I have to squish all of us into a day or 2 days whenever he's not with his family or seeing his friends or I'm not working or busy with my family and friends. So yeah life kinda gets in the way sometimes of us spending time together, but like I said we're learning how to deal with it. All in all I'm happy. Ambrosio and I have our issues but I think the thing that makes me smile is that we're both willing to talk with each other and really try to understand where the other is coming from and we really do compromise and improve. So how can I turn away from someone that is willing to work on us as much as I am! Now I know I care for him when my gushing about Ambrosio has taken to the internet and not just my head!
Switching subjects though I leave for vacation this weekend! So much to do! Oy Vey! We're road tripping it this year! Flying was just not in the budget! So my aunt, uncle and myself will all be driving on down the road to Texas! I can't wait! I haven't seen my Mom and Grandma since May and I miss them soooooooooo much! And for once in recent years I won't be on the road or traveling on my birthday! Ahhh the curse of being a christmas baby. Yes ladies and gentlemen when I have my birthday this year I will OFFICIALLY be in my 30's....it's the big 31!!!!! HAHAHA! I promise to take tonz of pics and post them up ASAP!
I wish all of you a Happy Holiday season! Merry Christmas and Happy New's Year! Here's to keeping those New Year's resolutions alive past Jan 6!

Wow! yeah guys I'm still alive! Sorry to my 2.5 readers that I haven't posted in so long. But I wanted to give you guys the reason why I haven't been posting so much. I mean other than me working all the DAMN time. His name is Ambrosio. Funny how I always seem to fall for guys whose name start with "A" hehehe. Anyway these are some pics of him that I took while I went to visit him at the beach. He lives right off the beach! Lucky SOB! I only see him on weekends. It's tough having a long distance relationship but we're making the best of it. Anyway, here are some pics of my baby...enjoy!
And here are a few pics of us at the beach and his place. Sorry for the quality of my pics but these were taking with my camera phone.
Getting reeady to cast out the net to catch some bait
Ambrosio chilling in my car

This pic right here is my favorite.
He's trying to catch "bait" so we can fish. But uh yeah we never caught any bait. hehehe

And here he is leaving fishless, But we still had fun trying!

great view of the ocean
And the view from the back of the ferry we rode on.

The view of the pier from the ferry
This, uh, is a pic I took of us...as you can see I'm not a good self photo taker. Oh vey!
And this is me just being stupid, I thought he looked so cute here sleeping so I quick took a pic of him.
So there you have it my man. He's complex and sweet and challenges me in a good way. Hope you enjoyed a side of me I don't get to often to show.

So now that blogger has this niffty new feature where I can put pictures and text in the same window, I'm gonna show some of my trip to SA in April.
This is a great pic of my Mom (on the far right) and 2 of her cousins, just maxing and relaxing during the Battle of Flowers Parade. I've been going to this parade since I was a child and every year it seems to get better and better. The floats, the colors, the bands!
So enjoy these pictures celebrating my hometown.
I love this one the big flag balloon flying over head it's as cool as it can be.
This is another great pic with the city as the backdrop. Just beautiful. But then again I'm a sucker for great picture.
And here is another great one showing all the flags of the world. Talk about color! WOW!

But not to sound like a broken record I'll move on to some other great pics. but do you see what I mean about all the great colors? It's just amazing to me! All the pictures are just so vibrant and jump right off the page to you.
How can you not enjoy them. But as great as these pictures are, nothing compares to being there and witnessing all this first hand. All the families just lining the streets with their coolers and umbrellas and anything else you can think of to say cool because it's hot as hell sitting under that sun! I tanned about 2 shades darker myself! LOL!
The Texas Cavaliers have been around forever and I love these next 3 pictures

Here's a pic of The Texas Cavaliers "El Rey Feo" (The Ugly King) but truth be told every rey feo that I've seen has been far from ugly.

No words for this I just love it...
And I'll end this post with a pic of me not exactly chilling....more like roasting but eh...still having a great tiime...I'll post more pics later!

All I gotta say is...
One Team
One Goal
Mission Accomplished.

It's no secret that I'm proud of where I come from! San Antonio is where my heart is. And let me tell you last night's game 7 was a nail bitter! My entire family both here and in Texas where watching on the edge of their seats! And when it was all over, when final buzzard sounded we called each other yelling and screaming and errrr...getting our order together for championship mercandise! WHOOOO HOOO! The SPURS did it! THEY WON! And not barely, not just edging Detroit, but they won and they put a staple on it! 81-74 Baby!
And even though Tim Duncan was the MVP of the series, and he played a terrific 2nd half, I'd even say the best of his playoff career. My vote would have to have gone to Manu Ginobili
. This guy found every opening! Made every shot! Sunk every free throw and dammit...hit some 3 pointers! Wow! And he's easy on the eyes! HELLO!
The only sad thing is...no more basketball till next season!
Hey at least I didn't hit the 30 day mark! So Ape per your request, I'm updating.
And I have a big GUESS WHAT! I got a NEW CAR! Yes! That's right...me...a NEW CAR! HAHAHAHAHAHA! Oh and she's (the car) i
s real pretty!
It's a 2005 Saturn Vue and man am I excited! I was able to trade in my old car and get this baby and she is prefect! This is a picture of it, but mine is storm grey. I've had her a week and I can't wait until after work so I can get in the car and drive! LOL it has the new car smell and everything! Oh...just looking at it makes me happy! Nothing like a new toy to lift your spirits! hehehe =)

Happy Birthday Ape!!
Girl I know I'm late, but I bring greeting from the sticks! AKA...Eagle Pass, Tx. Despite everything this town doesn't have I was able to find a hotel that is WI FI!!! Thank God for small favors! I know I know I'm a horrible friend. No call, no card, no gift...yet! But like Molly, would you still love me if I was on time?? I.....didn't think so!
And on that note...I'd like to say Hippy Hoppy Happ Happ Happy Birthday to my friend Ape! I know we don't talk as often as we should but ya know I love and I'm so so so so blessed to have you as a friend! You are truly one in a million and judging by all the dedications everyone is leaving for you on their blogs and all the gifts your kids made you, I know I'm not the only one that thinks this! What a positive role model you have been for fans everywhere. And you are the text book example that good things do come to deserving people! I'm so happy for you and all the success that a little habbit called Short Track has presented you over the years! The best is yet to come Apey! And I plan to cheer you on for it! Love ya sista! Muuuwah!
